When Marshall Aerospace obtained lottery funding to rebuild the last flying Vulcan MK2 bomber they obviously needed to have recourse to the original manuals. They realised that having to use the fragile old documents might result in unacceptable damage to them. The engineers, however, needed frequent and constant access to the manuals, from multiple locations, if the project was to get off the ground. Mitral was approached to suggest a solution.
After consultation with Mitral, Marshalls decided the manuals should be scanned on to CD so that an electronic version of the parts schedule is available to their engineers. They then required copies which could be sold around the world to interested individuals.
The manuals were received into Mitral's Bureau facility for initial scanning. They were then indexed, to a predefined set of references, using OCR technology to produce a set of fully searchable CDs for the engineers rebuilding the bomber. No paper was harmed in the implementation of this project! Copies of the CD are being produced in PDF format which are available to those many people around the world who are interested in aircraft and in this exciting project specifically. Selling these CDs raises further funding to sustain the viability of the project and to assist with future maintenance.
Mitral, as a company with its eye very much on the future, is proud to have played a part in preserving a part of our aviation history.
